ND Women Connect -- from the Notre Dame Club of Detroit

September 2009

Hi everyone!

We've got info about Facebook, job search assistance, football tailgaters, and national alumnae efforts.  So read on ---

Hurray!  We Now Have Our Own Facebook Page(s)!
Laurie Shea Hix '88 has created the ND Women Connect Detroit Facebook group with two links for all of us to use:

This first link goes to the ND Women Connect Detroit Facebook group:

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=111794516109

A second link takes you to the Notre Dame Women Connect fan page:

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Notre-Dame-Women-Connect-Detroit/128328869841?ref=share.

The group and fan pages have different functionality, although we're not quite sure what that is yet.  Still learning!  At this point, we'd recommend belonging to both sites.  The group page contains a link to the fan page.  You can also search for the group once you're in Facebook by typing out the full proper title, which is: "Notre Dame Women Connect Detroit".  Laurie will also be inviting local grads in, using our Irish Online database and our Alumna Update email list.

Laurie has uploaded photos from our past events and links of interest back into ND and to our Detroit Club website.  The pages remain a work in progress and all suggestions and input are welcome (contact Laurie at lhix@brogan.com).  This Facebook idea was proposed at our May Happy Hour as one way for local grads to stay in touch and support each other.  Thank you so much to Laurie for making this idea into a reality so quickly!

Female Grads Looking for New Employment
Speaking of support... we have three alumnae currently listed on our Club website's Job Board who are each actively looking for a new job.  If you know of any openings in the areas of Government Relations/Advocacy, Law, Marketing, Graphic Design, or German, please consider contacting these women with your information.  Just head on over to www.nddetroit.com -> Career/Job Network -> Job Board to look at their resumes and obtain their contact info.  Thank you!

ND Women Connect Across the Country
At the August NDWC Steering Committee meeting, Karen Conway '89JD (Director of Notre Dame Alumni Academic Programs) told us that she'd been contacted by over 20 different cities inquiring about starting a local NDWC chapter.  There are even alumnae in Puerto Rico and Europe interested in forming groups.  A steering committee member is being assigned to each new/emerging chapter as a mentor/advisor/cheerleader.

Locally, we've cleaned up the Detroit Chapter webpage on the NDWC website.  Our goal is to keep that Detroit page up-to-date on local activities -- not only for our own local alumnae but also for other chapters to use as an idea-generator.  Please check out the NDWC link on a regular basis:

Lastly, at the national level, we are still moving forward with the "Workplace Reentry Workshop" idea.  A subcommittee has been formed to discuss the idea with relevant University contacts and to begin assembling a formal proposal.

Career Webinars from Notre Dame
Hopefully, everyone has been notified about the Career Transition Webinars that are sponsored by Notre Dame and open to all of its alumni.  They're taking place this month and are FREE.  There are four modules:

  1. Organizing and Executing a Successful Job Search Campaign - Friday 9/4, 1:30-3:00PM.
  2. How You Look: Winning the Impression Game - Thursday 9/10, 1:30-3:00PM.
  3. How You Sound: Articulate Interactions - Friday, 9/18, 1:30-3:00 PM.
  4. Be The Leader They Seek: Effective Answers, Actions and Attitude - Friday 9/25, 1:30-3:00PM.

I attended these webinars during August and especially liked #1 and #3.  More info and registration links can be found at http://career.alumni.nd.edu, logging into Irish Online, clicking on "Career Resources", and navigating to Webinars.
